What is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
Ethnic Rhinoplasty is a rhinoplasty method that can be applied to individuals of different ethnic origins who visit Turkey to get rhinoplasty surgery. Since the physiological characteristics of each ethnicity differ, it is of great importance to preserve those characteristics in the cosmetic operations and to perform the operations without disrupting the natural appearance.
They are generally not different from common rhinoplasty procedures, other than improving the appearance and/or function of the nose while preserving the unique characteristics of the individual’s genetic heritage. Techniques used in ethnic rhinoplasty require extensive knowledge and experience of the structural differences in the noses of African, Asian, Latin and Middle Eastern individuals.
What Are the Differences Between Types of Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
Each ethnic group has its own unique anatomical structure, so different techniques must be used to preserve one’s genetic heritage.
African
People of African descent have the following nasal features and the operation should be performed in a way that does not disrupt these features:
- Weak or thin nasal cartilage
- Thick skin on the nose
- Low nasal bridge
- Wide nostrils
Asian
People of Asian descent have the following nasal features and the operation should be performed in a way that does not disrupt these features:
- Flat nasal profile
- Weak nasal bridge
- Wide and weak nasal tip
- Flared nostrils
Korean
People of Korean descent have distinct concerns and nose characteristics compared to other Asian ethnicities. People of Korean descent have the following nasal features and the operation should be performed in a way that does not disrupt these features:
- Weak nose bridge
- Flat nasal profile
- Wide nasal tip
- Flared nostrils
Hispanic/Latin
People of Hispanic, Caribbean, or Central/South American descent have unique nasal characteristics. Therefore, techniques specific to Hispanic/Latin ethnicities have been developed.
People of Hispanic/Latino descent share several nasal characteristics, such as thick skin and a bulging tip that are difficult to correct or reshape with conventional rhinoplasty methods. Operations should be performed in a way that does not disrupt the following features:
- Large nasal bridge (Spanish descent)
- Wide, flat nostrils (Caribbean)
- Flat nasal tips and bridges (Central/South America)
Indian
People of Indian descent have the following nasal features and the operation should be performed in a way that does not disrupt these features:
- Round nasal tip
- Wider nasal structure
- Thicker nasal skin
- Downward sloping nasal shape
- Nose bridge bump or hump
Middle Eastern
People of Middle Eastern descent, on the other hand, stand out as a large and diverse group with their personalized wishes. Operations should be performed in a way that does not disrupt the following features:
- Large nasal profile
- Curved nasal bridge
- Bulbous or droopy nasal tip
Persian
Although people of Persian descent are a subgroup of Middle Easterners, they have unique nasal features that may require more different techniques. Operations should be performed in a way that does not impair the following features:
- Large nose profile
- Downward nasal bridge slope
- Bulbous nasal tip
Jewish
Persons of Jewish descent have the following nasal features and the operation should be performed in a way that does not disrupt these features:
- Amorphous nasal tip
- Over-projected nose tip
- Large hump on the nasal dorsum
How is Ethnic Rhinoplasty Carried Out?
During the pre-operative consultation, the nasal structure is examined by the plastic surgeon. At this point, it is very important to clearly express the complaints. During the consultation process, the photographs taken with the Vectra device are modeled in 3D.
This model is important for the doctor to demonstrate the procedure that will be performed. It provides the opportunity to visualize the post-operative profile or symmetry before the operation, and to analyze the problem correctly and yield the correct results.
Ethnic Rhinoplasty is a 2 to 4 hour operation performed under general anesthesia. In these closed or open operations corrections are carried out on the tissue, cartilage and bones. The technique that will be used in the operation depends on the nasal structure of the person.
In cartilage and bone revision, deficient or excess tissues are corrected by surgically working between the nasal skin and the cartilage-bone skeleton. Then, the desired shape is obtained by reshaping the bone and cartilage with various surgical procedures
What Measures Should Be Taken After Ethnic Rhinoplasty Operations?
- Ice should be applied for the first 2 days.
- The nose should be protected from physical impact for 1 month.
Asymmetry is observed in the nostrils until 6 to 8 weeks after the operation. After full recovery, nostril symmetry of 90% to 95% is expected. - It is normal to have slight bleeding in the form of oozing or dripping after the operation. However, you must consult your doctor in the case of severe and continuous bleeding. Your nose may be blocked intermittently after the operation. This may continue for 6 to 8 weeks.
- Edema: It may take 10 to 14 days for the bruising to resolve. After a month, edema and swelling decrease and disappear.
Tampon: It is removed by the doctor 3 to 5 days after the operation.
Splint: It is removed by the doctor 5 to 7 days after the operation.
Stitches: Dissolving stitches are used which does not require removal.
Showering: In the first days after the operation, the hair can be washed without wetting the face. After the splint is removed, the face can also be washed.
Using Face Creams: Creams can be used after the splint is removed.
Using Glasses: Glasses light in weight can be used one month after the operation.
Heavy-framed glasses can be used after 6 to 7 weeks.
Resuming Exercise and Physical Activity: It is recommended to gradually resume the exercise routine one had before the operation:
1 week after the operation, 25 percent of the previous exercise routine and intensity,
2 weeks after the operation, 50 percent of the previous exercise routine and intensity,
3 weeks after the operation, there is no harm in exercising at a rate of 75 percent of the previous exercise routine and intensity,
After 4 weeks, one can resume their exercise routine in its previous pattern and intensity.
Sexual Activity: It is not recommended for the first 4 weeks after the operation.
Alcohol Use: Alcohol should not be consumed for 2 weeks after the operation.
Yielding the Final Results: 80% improvement occurs at the end of the first month. Full recovery is expected within 6 to 12 months.
