What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Depending on the body structure of each woman, breasts also tend to have some differences. Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery operation to change the shape and size of the breast.

For example, in some women, the breast size may be small for their body. Or, the desired size could not be achieved in the previous operation and a second operation may be needed. Some people, on the other hand, may prefer this operation to correct the size difference between their two breasts.

How is Breast Augmentation Surgery Carried Out?

Although breast augmentation surgery is mostly applied for cosmetic reasons, whether the person is suitable for this operation is assessed by the plastic surgeon during the consultation.

During the pre-operative consultation process, the breast is examined by the plastic surgeon. At this point, it is very important to clearly express the complaints. In operations performed under general anesthesia, steps of the appropriate method are followed.

Breast augmentation can be carried out with silicone implants or through fat injection. This decision depends on the patient’s wishes and the suitability of their body.

Dissolving stitches are used in breast augmentation surgery. For this reason, there is no need to remove the sutures. However, as in any surgical operations, a scar 4 to 5 cm in size will occur. There are several alternative sites for incisions in breast surgeries. These differ according to the body type and structure of the person. Generally, incisions can be made on the fold under the breast, the nipple if its size is suitable, and the armpit.

What Are the Determinants of Breast Size?

Breast size is also among the subjects that should be decided on and settled together with the plastic surgeon during the consultation. As breast size varies among different body types, there are some details that need to be assessed in order to make the right decision, especially in silicone implant operations. These can be listed as;

• Quality of the skin,
• Diameter and size of the rib cage,
• The degree of sagging of the breasts.

What Measures Should Be Taken After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

• After the operation, you will be given a special bra and bandage that you need to use for 6 weeks. You will need to use it during the day and night for the first 3 weeks, and only at night for the following 3 weeks.
• 3 weeks after the surgery, your doctor will recommend you to start an implant massage. You should apply this massage for 5 minutes, 3 times a day for the first 6 months after the operation. Detailed information on how to continue the massage will be provided by your doctor.

Edema: It decreases by 80% in the first month after the operation, it is expected to completely resolve between 6 to 12 months. Bruises may persist for up to 2 weeks.

Stitches: Dissolving stitches are used which do not require removing.

Stitch Marks: They will remain red for a month after the operation, after which the color will fade.

Showering: Showering can be resumed 3 days after the operation.

Exercise and Physical Activity: They can be resumed1 month after the operation.

Sexual Activity: It is not recommended for the first 4 weeks after the operation.

Alcohol Use: Alcohol should not be consumed for the first 10 days after the operation.

Yielding the Final Results: 80% improvement occurs at the end of the first month. Full recovery is expected within 6 to 12 months.
