What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a popular application used to remove excess fat in certain parts of the body, such as the abdomen, waist, hips, legs, back, arms or neck. Liposuction also helps to shape these areas and improve their contours.
Liposuction is not a general weight loss method. In order to get rid of excess weight, a diet and exercise program should be implemented, otherwise bariatric surgery applications such as sleeve gastrectomy can be preferred. Then, liposuction can be applied for excess fat accumulated in certain parts of the body.
What Are The Purposes of Liposuction?
When one gains weight, the volume and size of the fat cells in the body increase. Liposuction helps to reduce the number of fat cells in the area with excess fat. The amount of extracted fat depends on the appearance or volume of the application area. In these applications, the results and the resulting contour change are usually permanent as long as the person’s weight remains unchanged.
How long the effects tend to last and the improved appearance of the body also depend on the elasticity of the body. If the skin is supple enough, it will appear smoother. However, if it has lost its elasticity, the skin in the liposuctioned area may become loose.
How Is Liposuction Carried Out?
Although liposuction is mostly applied for cosmetic reasons, the person is assessed for suitability for this operation by the plastic surgeon during the consultation.
During the pre-operative consultation, the body structure is assessed by the plastic surgeon. At this point, it is very important to clearly express the complaints. During the consultation, the photographs taken with the Vectra device are modeled in 3D.
This model is especially important for the doctor to demonstrate the procedure. It provides the opportunity to visualize the post-operative body structure before the operation and to analyze the problem correctly and yield the correct results.
There are multiple methods of liposuction application. The procedure that is suitable for the body structure is selected in accordance with the doctor’s recommendation. In operations performed under general anesthesia, steps for the appropriate method are followed.
What Is Conventional Liposuction?
A small cannula and a vacuum are used together. After a special liquid is administered to the fat layer, the fat cells are broken down and vacuumed.
Excess fat extracted from the body during liposuction can be transferred to another part of the body as a filler. This process is one of the most ideal applications used to reduce wrinkles or eliminate disproportions in the body.
Which Parts of the Body Can Liposuction Be Applied To?
It can be applied to arms, inner and outer thighs, abdomen, hips, neck, chest and back. It can also be used in the treatment of breast enlargement (gynecomastia) in men.
What Are the Advantages of Conventional Liposuction?
- It is a surgical procedure that has been applied by specialist doctors for a very long time. With the advancements in technology, the risks of liposuction continue to decrease.
- It helps eliminate persistent and regional fat excess.
What Is Vaser Liposuction?
In this method, fat cells are broken down using ultrasonic sound waves. Liquidized fat cells are easily removed from the body. Vaser Liposuction technology directly targets fat cells, so it does not damage the surrounding muscle tissue, vessels or nerves. At the same time, owing to the ultrasonic sound waves used, the extracted fat tissue and the stem cells in it are not damaged.
Therefore, this fat tissue can also be transferred to other parts of the body. Vaser liposuction can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the size of the treatment area.
Which Parts of the Body Can It Be Applied To?
It can be applied to arms, inner and outer legs, abdomen, hips, neck, jowl, chest and back. It can also be used in the treatment of breast enlargement (gynecomastia) in men.
What Are the Advantages of Vaser Liposuction?
- It offers the opportunity to resume daily activities sooner.
- After the operation, edema and bruising occur less commonly, and less pain is felt. In addition, fluctuations in the skin are less common.
- As the extracted fat can be used as a natural filler material. It can be used in other aesthetic surgeries such as breast augmentation, reduction or lift, tummy tuck or face lift.
- As Vaser Liposuction only reaches the fat tissue while preserving other tissues, it provides the opportunity to work on sensitive areas such as the neck and arms without damaging them.
What is Laser Liposuction?
Unwanted localised fat excess in the body is first broken down by laser beams, liquidified fat is then removed with the help of a cannula. Laser beams do not damage the nerves and thin blood vessels which may bleed. As Laser Liposuction also has skin tightening effects, sagging and excess skin that may occur after the procedure are prevented.
Collagen synthesis is stimulated, especially with laser wavelengths used to rejuvenate the skin, and the regeneration process of the skin is initiated. It can be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on the size of the application area.
Which Parts Of The Body Can It Be Applied To?
Arms, inner and outer thighs, abdomen, hips, inner knees, neck, jowl, chest and back. It can also be used in the treatment of breast enlargement (gynecomastia) in men.
What Are the Advantages?
- It offers the opportunity to resume daily activities earlier.
- After the operation, edema and bruising are seen less commonly, and less pain is felt. In addition, fluctuations in the skin are less common.
- It tightens the skin and triggers collagen production.
- In cases where even more fat needs to be removed, it is possible to perform skin tightening with Laser Liposuction, which can be preferred after conventional liposuction.
Who Can Get Liposuction?
Anyone who has difficulty eliminating excess fat after weight loss and generally has stable weight can be a suitable candidate for liposuction.
Who Can Not Get Liposuction?
Liposuction is not an alternative weight loss method. Therefore, it should not be resorted to to lose weight. Apart from this, the conditions that make the implementation difficult are as follows:
- Vascular occlusions that cause low blood flow,
- Coronary artery disease and occlusion in the heart,
- Diabetes,
- A weakened immune system.
What Are the Risks of the Operation?
In liposuction operations, as in any surgical procedures, there are risks such as bleeding and a hypersensitivity reaction to anesthesia. Possible risks specific to the operation are as follows:
- Contour Irregularities: Due to various reasons such as incorrect application and loss of elasticity of the skin, fluctuations and patches may occur on the skin as a result of the application, or the skin may appear pale. These changes may be temporary or permanent.
- Edema: There may be transient fluid accumulation under the skin surface. If these liquid accumulations persist, they may require drainage.
- Numbness: There may be permanent or temporary loss of sensation in the treatment area. This may be caused by temporary nerve irritation.
- Infection: Skin infection occurrence is extremely rare, but possible.
- Bruises: There may be small bruises in the places where fat is removed. Resulting darkened patches may persist for a few days.
- Fat Embolism: Pieces of fat can become trapped in a blood vessel, accumulate in the lungs and travel to the brain. This is a medical condition that requires immediate attention.
What Measures Should Be Taken After the Liposuction Operation?
- You should watch your diet. Weight gain negatively affects the results.
- 1 week after the operation, the treatment area must be massaged 2 times a day.
- The corset must be used for at least 3 weeks. At the end of the 3 weeks, your doctor will advise you about continuing or stopping the corset use, depending on your recovery process.
Bruising: Bruises are expected to resolve within 3 weeks.
Stitches: Dissolving stitches are used which do not require removing.
Resuming Exercise and Physical Activity: It Depends on the Treatment area. The individual must consult their doctor before resuming their exercise routine.
Sexual activity: It is not recommended for the first 4 weeks after the operation.
Alcohol Use: Alcohol should not be consumed for 10 days after the operation.
Smoking: Smoking affects wound healing negatively and is not recommended.
Yielding the Final Results: 80% improvement occurs at the end of the first month. Full recovery is expected within 6 to 12 months.
